For someone telling the story of the American comedy film, one of the most striking subplots is the relative paucity of great female comedians onscreen. Especially when compared with television, which has nurtured the brilliant likes of Lucille Ball, Mary Tyler Moore and Roseanne Barr, the American film has remained mostly inhospitable to female comedians. The ranks of critically and commercially successful comic stars, past and present, have been dominated by men.
